The Great Wall is a gigantic construction which stretches from Hushan(虎山), Dandong, Liaoning Province in the east and ends at Jiayuguan Pass(嘉峪关), Gansu Province in the west, across Liaoning, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Gansu, and Qinghai Provinces.
According to some comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies like infrared and GPS, the total length of all the Great Wall sections built in all periods reaches 21,196 kilometers (13,171 miles) traversing many regions of China. Among these, those built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) are the most commonly seen and best-preserved sites till today, stretching 8,850 km (5,500 mi).
The length is made up of 6,259 km (3,889 miles) sections of actual wall, 359 km (223 miles) of trenches and 2,232 km (1,387 miles) of natural defensive barriers such as hills and rivers.
